About the Bug Out Food Bar
Definition of “Bug Out”: British Army slang - To move away from your current location very quickly (often under fire) because your position has been compromised by the enemy.
If you need to flee an emergency of any nature, after getting to a safe location, food and water is going to be your most important first and lasting concern. The Bug Out Bar was designed to be able to satisfy and exceed your nutritional requirements from a broad range of high quality ingredients.
Delivering the widest and most balanced range of nutrients of any product in the Healthelicious range, this bar can be used as an afternoon pick-me-up, emergency rations, nourishment before, during and after endurance sports or for post workout repair and recovery nourishment.
Originally designed as a meal replacement bar, this cannot be marketed as such because despite supplying at least 25% of the Estimated Average Requirements of 10 minerals and 14 vitamins for an adult male or female, it has a tad too much vitamin A (from the beta-carotene in the natural ingredients) to comply with the Food Standards requirements.
These were my design specifications:
- 1. Will serve as a meal replacement/emergency rations
- 2. Will provide a minimum of 25% of Recommended Daily Intake of as many vitamins and minerals as possible
- 3. No GMOs
- 4. No artificial colours
- 5. No artificial flavours
- 6. No artificial sweeteners
- 7. No cane sugar
- 8. No dairy
- 9. No excitotoxins
- 10. No detectable gluten
- 11. No high fructose corn syrup
- 12. No hydrogenated oils
- 13. No irradiated ingredients
- 14. No MSG added
- 15. No peanuts
- 16. No preservatives added
- 17. No soy (currently contains soy lecithin)
- 18. No manufactured trans fats
- 19. No vegetable oils
- 20. No wheat
- 21. As many raw, natural ingredients as possible to provide as wide a range of nutrients as possible to the body
- 22. Not cook the bar to preserve the enzymes in the raw ingredients and thus increase utilisation of nutrients
- 23. Activated seeds (pepitas, sesame, sunflower) and nuts (almonds, cashews, hazel nuts, pecans, walnuts) that need it to increase absorbtion of nutrients
- 24. Minimum of 8% protein
- 25. Good source of fiber
- 26. Vacuum sealed for maximum shelf life
- 27. Packed in resealable bag to preserve freshness of uneaten portion (not yet, coming)
- 28. Sealed from light for maximum shelf life
- 29. Made in Australia
It’s quite a job formulating bars that gives the recommended daily intake of 24 nutrients as much as possible from natural ingredients.
