Cranberries
A red berry smaller than a cherry traditionally served with turkey, the cranberry has many health benefits. It is a good source of:
- vitamin C
- antioxidants known as proanthocyanidins
- resveratrol (the anti-inflammatory compound that protects heart and nerve cells and assists DNA repair thus helping prevent cancer)
- bioflavonoids (linked to the prevention of different cancers)
- organic acids that help dissolve fat deposits
In addition, cranberries help:
- clear up urinary tract infrections
- prevent gum disease by killing dental plaque producing bacteria
- increase HDL (“good” cholestrol)
- prevent the bacteria causing ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, from attaching to the gastric wall (H. pylori also contributes to food allergies.)
- reduce the risk of forming kidney stones
- dilate the bronchial tubes so relieving asthma
- help boost metabolism (good for weight loss)
- banish cellulite
90% of urinary tract infections are caused by E. coli. In 2002 researchers from the University of Wisconsin and Rutgers University showed that the antioxidants known as proanthocyanidins in cranberry help prevent E. coli bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls.
